Welcome to smycms.com

The website of The Smycms.

The Smycms have been in existence since 1963, staging musical shows every year since. From small beginnings in the church hall of St. Michaels Church, Edinburgh with Swingalong, they finally arrived on the Edinburgh Am Dram scene in 1973 when they staged Fiddler On The Roof at the Church Hill Theatre .

Our 2012 Production Update

Sadly we have had to cancel our production of Seven Brides For Seven Brothers scheduled for Tuesday 17th to Saturday 21st April 2012. Basically we could not find enough guys who wanted to be a part of  this classic Hollywood musical.

This is the second year running this has happened as we also had to cancel our 2011 Production of Eurobeat which was a great shame as it is a fabulous show, a spoof on the Eurovision song Contest complete with audience participation including mobile phone voting to determine the winner, again we couldn’t get enough people on board to make it work, maybe someone is trying to tell us something.

This is a real shame as our previous productions have been excellent. I read an article recently that complained about Amateur Musical societies always playing it safe by constantly doing shows from the list of Hollywood classics, e.g. Carousel, South Pacific, Oklahoma etc and not choosing new or modern shows, well I  don’t hold with this view and from The Smycms point of view just doesn’t cut ice. Our 2010 production was an adult version of Bugsy Malone, then in 2008 we took a revue on the life of Cole Porter called Red, Hot and Cole and turned it into a full company show, now if that’s not being innovative and living dangerously (we even designed and built our own working splurge guns for Bugsy) then I don’t know what is.

We are currently trying to organise a concert for later in the year and as it will be our 5oth anniversary year in 2013 we are looking to hold a reunion of ex members of which there are many (details to follow), but as I have said on many occasions,  I can’t do this on my own, nor can Paul Findlay our current chairman (who is seriously considering his future involvement with the company he has been with since the early days)  or Paul Whyte, we need your support or smycms.com will just become a tribute site to one of the better companies that have graced the Edinburgh Amateur stage.

Thanks for reading. Tony McDonald, The Editor.

SMYCMS NEED YOUR SUPPORT

If you can’t spare the time to actually rehearse and appear in a smycms production, there are other ways you can help, why not become a helper during our Show Week. We always need helpers to cover front of house duties, selling raffle tickets and programs, directing our audience to their seats, first aid and fire officers (to cover our health and safety requirements as laid down by law). Helper Forms are available from company members.

If you can’t even spare a few hours then why not support The Smycms by helping to raise much needed funds, by visiting The Smycms Spend and Raise E-Store, register as a supporter and then every time you go shopping on line just remember to go to our E=Store and visit the many companies registered like John Lewis, Amazon and Marks and Spencer to name three. It does not cost you anything but each time you make a purchase The Smycms will receive commision on your sale, you will also have access to many special offers .
